2nd Gen lte WiFi model.
Android 5.1.1 with timurs Kernal.
I had a MiniStreamer usb to coaxial spdif device which worked perfectly. Worked whenever power was cut, tablet went into sleep mode, otg cable replugged in etc.
Now I've swapped from the MiniStreamer to a hifimediy sabre u2 usb dac which also has optical spdif out as I have a new processor which takes optical not Coax.
The people is, the only time it works is when the dac is connected and I power off and on the tablet.
The moment the dac is disconnected (either otg cable removed or power to dac is cut) or the tablet goes into sleep mode from the fixed installation thing when car is turned off and then on, the tablet won't use the dac but will play from the internal speakers.
The power event manager shows the dac is connected in usb devices still, so I'm not sure what's going on here.
Do you think Android 6 would solve some of these finicky usb audio problems?

Try giving soundabout a try to see if you can force the sound through the USB, I think they have a few days trial version for testing, but I think the USB feature will only work with the pro version after the trial has finished, not sure it will solve your problem but may be worth giving it a go . play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.woodslink.android.wiredheadphoneroutingfix

Well a big thank you sir! It works. I don't know why, and I shouldn't need it, but it'll do for now.
When timur is back I'm going to look into his new Kernal for marshmallow
